New to Crypto Security?¶
You own some cryptocurrency. Maybe Bitcoin, maybe Ethereum, maybe something else. You've heard you should "secure it properly" but the advice is confusing, contradictory, and full of jargon.
This page cuts through the noise.
The One Thing You Must Understand¶
When you buy crypto on an exchange (Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, etc.), you don't actually own it. The exchange does. They give you an IOU.
This matters because:
- Exchanges get hacked (Mt. Gox, FTX, countless others)
- Exchanges can freeze your account
- Exchanges can go bankrupt
- Exchanges can be forced to seize assets by governments
"Not your keys, not your coins" means: unless you control the private keys, you're trusting someone else with your money.
What Are Private Keys and Seed Phrases?¶
Think of it like this:
| Traditional Banking | Cryptocurrency |
|---|---|
| Bank account number | Public address (safe to share) |
| PIN + password | Private key (never share) |
| — | Seed phrase (master backup of all keys) |
Your seed phrase (also called recovery phrase or mnemonic) is typically 12 or 24 words that can regenerate all your private keys.
If someone gets your seed phrase, they can take everything.
If you lose your seed phrase, you lose everything.
This is the fundamental problem of crypto security.
The Three Levels of Crypto Security¶
Level 1: Exchange Custody (You're Here Now)¶
- Easy to use
- You don't control your keys
- Vulnerable to exchange failure/hacks
- Risk: Medium-high (depends on exchange)
Level 2: Self-Custody with Hardware Wallet¶
- You control your keys
- Offline storage (harder to hack)
- Seed phrase backup is vulnerable
- Device can be lost, damaged, seized
- Risk: Medium (seed phrase is weak point)
Level 3: Sovereign Digital Vault¶
- You control your keys
- Encrypted seed phrase backup
- Inheritance planning built-in
- Coercion protection
- Quantum-resistant encryption
- Risk: Low (multiple layers of protection)
UnoLock operates at Level 3.
Common Beginner Mistakes¶
Writing seed phrase on paper and hiding it¶
Problem: Fire, flood, theft, discovery by others, degradation over time
Taking a photo of your seed phrase¶
Problem: Cloud backup syncs it to servers you don't control
Storing seed phrase in a password manager¶
Problem: Most aren't designed for this; single point of failure
Splitting seed phrase across locations¶
Problem: Lose one piece, lose everything; doesn't prevent theft
Telling no one where it is¶
Problem: If you die, your family loses everything
Telling everyone where it is¶
Problem: Trust is a vulnerability
What UnoLock Does Differently¶
UnoLock is a sovereign digital vault that solves these problems:
| Problem | UnoLock Solution |
|---|---|
| Paper degrades | Encrypted cloud storage across multiple regions |
| Photos get synced | Client-side encryption before upload |
| Single point of failure | Multiple recovery methods (LockoutGuard) |
| Family can't access after death | LegacyLink inheritance system |
| Coerced to reveal | Safeword PIN hides (DuressDecoy) or deletes (LifeSafe) marked sensitive Spaces |
| Quantum computers will break encryption | Post-quantum cryptography built in |
| Can be tracked/identified | Zero-knowledge, anonymous by design |
