Inheritance and Legacy

Your digital assets should outlast you. These guides help you configure inheritance systems that transfer access to trusted successors without exposing your security during your lifetime.

The Inheritance Problem

Digital assets create an inheritance challenge that traditional assets do not face. If you die without making provisions, your family may permanently lose access to your cryptocurrency, documents, credentials, and irreplaceable records. The encryption that protects your assets from attackers also protects them from your heirs.

Traditional inheritance solutions work poorly for digital assets. Writing credentials in a will exposes them to anyone who accesses the will during probate. Sharing credentials with family members gives them access during your lifetime. Storing credentials in a safe deposit box may work but depends on proper legal documentation and family knowledge of the box's existence.

UnoLock provides purpose-built inheritance mechanisms that solve these problems. Your successors gain access only when specific conditions are met, typically extended inactivity that suggests death or permanent incapacity. While you remain active, your security is uncompromised.

Setting Up LegacyLink: Digital Inheritance Planning

Configure time-delayed inheritance that activates only after extended inactivity. Your successors gain access to your vault—documents, credentials, cryptocurrency, everything—when you can no longer manage it yourself, but have no access while you remain active.

Time: 15-20 minutes. Difficulty: Intermediate. Tier: Sovereign or HighRisk.

Planning Considerations

When planning digital inheritance, consider these factors.

Timeline configuration balances access speed against false trigger protection. Shorter timelines get assets to successors faster but risk triggering during extended travel or illness. Longer timelines provide more buffer but delay legitimate inheritance.

Successor selection requires identifying individuals you trust both to handle assets responsibly and to be available when needed. Successors should be likely to outlive you, capable of managing digital assets or willing to learn, and trustworthy with potentially significant wealth.

Credential storage determines whether inheritance can actually occur. Credentials that cannot be found or accessed when needed render your configuration useless. Consider physical storage in secure locations, attorney custody, or trusted intermediary arrangements.

Documentation helps successors understand what they are inheriting. Consider maintaining within your vault a document describing your digital assets, their approximate values, and any special handling instructions.

Tier Requirements

LegacyLink is available in both Sovereign and HighRisk. It is an inheritance feature, not a separate plan, and both tiers also include LockoutGuard and Spaces.

The two tiers differ only in what the safeword PIN does: Sovereign hides marked sensitive Spaces (DuressDecoy), while HighRisk permanently deletes them. Choose based on your security requirements; your inheritance options are the same in either.
